El DeLorean DMC-12 es un automóvil deportivo muy exclusivo fabricado entre 1981 y 1982. Se caracteriza por sus puertas de ala de gaviota y su carrocería metálica de acero inoxidable. También es muy conocido por su aparición en la trilogía de películas de Back to the Future. Después de aparecer en estas películas, el DMC-12 se convirtió en un objeto de culto. El primer prototipo apareció en octubre de 1976 y la producción empezó oficialmente en 1981 en la fábrica que DMC tenía en Dunmurry, en Irlanda del Norte.

El motor que montan los DeLorean es PRV (Peugeot-Renault-Volvo), un motor V6 de inyección Bosch. El bloque del motor y las culatas están hechos de una aleación ligera de aluminio, y tiene un árbol de levas en cabeza y dos válvulas por cilindro. Rinde130 CV (97 kW) a 5500 rpm y un par de 208 Nm a 2750 rpm. Con esta potencia el automóvil desarrolla una velocidad máxima de 209 km/h. DeLorean declaró que el DMC-12 podía acelerar de 0 a 60 mph (97 km/h) en 8,5 segundos, respetable a principios de los años 80.

 William Collins y John DeLorean imaginaron un chasis producido con una tecnología nueva denominada Elastic Reservoir Moulding (ERM).

Durante el tiempo de producción, la tasa de desempleo era muy alta en Irlanda del Norte y los residentes hacían cola para pedir empleo en la fábrica. La mano de obra estaba compuesta por protestantes y católicos que estaban contentos de apartar sus diferencias religiosas para trabajar en equipo.

La DeLorean Motor Company se declaró en quiebra a finales de 1982 tras el arresto de John DeLorean en octubre de ese año por cargos de tráfico de drogas. Más tarde descubrieron que no era culpable, pero era demasiado tarde para el DMC-12.

La carrocería del DMC-12 fue diseñada por el diseñador de Italdesign Giorgetto Giugiaro, y tiene unos paneles construidos en acero inoxidable. Exceptuando a tres automóviles para una serie especial con carrocería chapada en oro, todos los DMC-12 que salieron de la fábrica no estaban cubiertos por pintura u otros revestimientos. De hecho existen DeLorean pintados, aunque éstos fueron pintados después de que fuesen adquiridos en la fábrica. El DeLorean apareció como un automóvil de lujo, pero de eficaz mantenimiento: los pequeños arañazos en las superficies de los paneles de acero inoxidable pueden ser eliminados con un estropajo no metálico. Los paneles de acero inoxidable fueron fijados a una estructura monocasco de plástico reforzado con fibra de vidrio, que a su vez se fija a un chasis con forma de doble "Y" derivado de la plataforma del Lotus Esprit.

La característica más llamativa del DMC-12 eran sus puertas de ala de gaviota. Los bajos y la suspensión del DMC-12 se basan en gran parte en el Lotus Esprit, con suspensión independiente en las cuatro ruedas, muelles helicoidales, y amortiguadores telescópicos. La suspensión delantera es de doble horquilla, y la trasera es una suspensión multibrazo.

La dirección es de cremallera y piñón. Las  llantas de precioso diseño, calzan neumáticos radiales Goodyear Eagle GT.

El DeLorean DMC-12 es muy conocido por su aparición como máquina del tiempo en la trilogía de Back to the Future (Regreso al futuro en España). La razón principal de que fuese elegido el DMC-12 fue que estaba diseñado de forma idónea para incluir la broma sobre la familia de granjeros que lo confunden con un OVNI en la primera película.

Sólo tres de los siete automóviles usados en las películas aún existen. Universal Studios posee dos de los coches restantes, los cuales usa de vez en cuando en exposiciones o para otras producciones. El último, usado en Back to the Future III, fue restaurado y salió a subasta en noviembre de 2011.

The DeLorean appeared as a luxury car, but effective maintenance: minor scratches on the surfaces of stainless steel panels can be removed with a non-metallic scouring pad. Stainless steel panels were attached to a plastic monocoque fiber-reinforced glass, which in turn is fixed to a frame with a double "Y" derivative Lotus Esprit platform.

The most striking feature of the DMC-12 were its gullwing doors. The low and the suspension of the DMC-12 was based largely on the Lotus Esprit, with independent suspension on all four wheels, coil springs and telescopic dampers. The front suspension is double-wishbone and rear multi-link suspension.

The DeLorean DMC-12 is well known for its appearance as a time machine in the trilogy of Back to the Future (Back to the Future in Spain). The main reason it was chosen the DMC-12 was designed in a way that was suitable to include the joke about the family of farmers who mistake it for a UFO in the first film.

Only three of the seven films used car still exist. Universal Studios has two of the remaining cars, which used occasionally in exhibitions or for other productions. The latter, used in Back to the Future III, was restored and went to auction in November 2011.
